Must Pack Snacks

I could probably re-do this list every couple of months when we find new snacks or the kids taste change, so we might just call this the must pack snacks of the month.

We take many day hikes and we have spent many (many!) long days weeks in the car traveling for fun, family, or moving. What is one thing you can never forget when traveling with kids?

Snacks!

Forget the toy, forget the coloring book, you can still make it through. You forget the snacks, you’re setting yourself up for failure. Snacks can make a long day much happier for all. I will say, my kids don’t eat very big meals yet. They would probably be fine snacking all day, so snacks are life. They’re big fans of the “small, frequent meal” way of eating. I am not a fan of cooking 6 mini meals a day (my summer), so they eat what we eat for dinner, I prep ahead breakfast and lunch, and I also plan on 2 snacks. When we are out and about, this is actually great because they are happier with 2-3 snacks than stopping for lunch. But since they eat a lot of snacks, I try to make sure they’re nutritious. Fruits and vegetables are usually in our bags. Apples, oranges, and pears are our go-to fruits. We can usually toss a bag of carrots or some celery sticks in our backpack and they hold up well on a hike and something the kids will always snack on.

We keep a basket in our pantry of quick grab and go snacks that travel well.

The grab and go list:

  • Clif Z Bars (the chocolate brownie is delicious!) - these are on sale a lot on Amazon and I snag them any time I see them on sale!
  • Lenny and Larry's The Complete Cookie - the kids would happily eat these every day. I love how much fiber and protein are in these.
  • Jif Natural To Go - to eat with apples and celery
  • Skinny Pop -Really, any skinny pop will do, but the mini cakes are perfect to go.
  • GoGo Squeeze -Great for toddlers and young kids
  • Bitsy's Brain Food -These are so great little treats, my kids really like the cinnamon, sweet potato and graham flavor
  • Chef's Cut- My kids like this particular brand best because they aren't spicy
  • RXBar - umm...they make pumpkin spice RXbars (I got these at Trader Joe's)! My basic life is now completely changed.
  • Chomps - ok so 2 kinds of beef sticks may seem excessive, but I like Chomps better and my kids don't :-/ I like the flavor of chomps a lot!
We usually also have some kind of granola or granola bar and random other snacks, but these are just a few that we are loving right now.

What's you or your kids favorite snacks right now?

To Indianapolis, IN

Indianapolis (from here on, known as Indy because...well...there is a reason it has a nickname) is known for fast cars and the Indy500, but there is so much more to this Midwestern city. When we decided to go here for a mini getaway, I wasn't sure what to expect, but we had a lot of fun exploring this city!

If traveling with kids, Indy has one of the best children's museums we have been to! And seriously, we have been to quite a few. Children's Museum of Indianapolis was such a fun place.

The museum is huge! And while we originally planned to go to a few more places during our day in the city, we ended up spending the majority of the day at the museum.

There were several exhibits, all laid out well and very interactive! No matter what your kid's interest, there is something for everyone. My boys especially loved the dinosaurs and car exhibits, but my daughters loved the circus and music area.

If the museums aren't for you, the riverwalk area is so beautiful, especially in the summer.

I have heard the zoo is also fantastic, but we ran out of time on our trip.

As for food in Indy, there is no shortage of great options. Honestly, endless options for whatever you like. We decided to check out Hollyhock Hill for it's outdoor seating option (we went in June on a beautiful day) and their family style dining. This works perfectly for a large family. We had so much food to share.
For an event or large group, I highly recommend.  Just a large family of 6, it was a wonderful dinner. It was very kid friendly, especially being outside. Their fried chicken was delicious.

What are you some of your favorite places in Indianapolis?

To Central California

What?!? There is more to California than Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco?? I had no idea ;)

I also must confess, we have never taken all four kids to Central Cali. We only had 3 when we last went, but can we just believe that taking 3 toddlers=taking a couple elementary aged kids and a toddler. It's like the same thing. Actually, the toddlers were way worse.

Our last trip to Central California was in the Spring of 2014. It was actually our second trip, because the first time we went (in 2012) we felt like there was so much more to see and do. And honestly, there is more than I wish we could have seen, but again, 3 toddlers. Our outdoor activities were limited because of the cool weather and we weren't big campers back then, especially when we could stay in base TLF (Vandenberg AFB) for super cheap. We opted for comfort over exploration on these trips (we had 9 month old twins the first time and a 1 year old and two 2 year olds the second time we went).

Central California has beautiful coasts, quiet beautiful rolling hills, filled with cattle, great farmers markets, and wineries.

I know staying on a base isn't an option for everyone. Even if you are military, staying at TLF in the summer months is pretty much impossible, so it's definitely a restrictive option, but for us, we had a great time. It was one of our favorite TLFs, with a 1 bedroom little house, kitchenette, and a playground within a short walk. Vandenberg is surrounded by large pine trees and after living in a city (we lived in Los Angeles at the time), the beautiful big trees and quiet surroundings of the base were a much needed get away from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles.

If base isn't an option, our second choice would have probably been an Air BnB. Santa Maria and Lompoc are cute towns. Lompoc has a lot of cute restaurants, a cute old town, and wineries. If you're more of a beach person, Jalama Beach has tent and RV sites.

Our first trip in 2012 was also the first time I used instagram.

The filters kill me.
But point being, Santa Barbara county beaches are gorgeous!

Google wineries for Central California, there are so many! Literally, every mile, we would see a sign for a different one. We did stop at one (I can't even remember the names anymore!) each time we went and both were fantastic, so I don't think you would be disappointed in any. I think next time we may have to leave the kids at home and attempt the Santa Maria Valley Wine Trail.

There is also no shortage of places to eat. Somewhere that we ate on both trips was AJ Spur's. This seems to be a pretty popular spot in the area. It was always packed. It is great for kids and SO MUCH FOOD. I really wish we had pictures of this fun spot, but most of our trips were spent with this as the view...
So cute, but not very active.

Our favorite little town in Central California had to be Solvang. I don't feel like this place gets enough attention. My mother's side of the family is Danish so this is like returning to my roots. This is the time to shop for Royal Copenhagen plates or trolls. My grandparents and a lot of my family have come here to visit with Danish tourist groups. I had honestly never heard of it until we were living in Los Angeles and my grandma mentioned that we needed to go to Solvang.
Solvang is also the place to get food if you like Scandinavian food. The architecture, food and shopping is all Scandinavian themed.
Our favorite stop was the book store and we couldn't turn down a picture with Hans Christian Andersen.
There is also some great hiking and Hans Christan Andersen park is a beautiful spot.

We have added this to our West Coast list to take all four kids, and hopefully we get the chance to some day, but there is so much to see in California, we will see if we can fit it in to our very long list of places to go.

If you are driving North from Los Angeles though and looking for a place to stop, you won't be disappointed with this section of California.

....to the National Parks

Did you know there are 413 National Parks? No?

Me either.

After traveling to quite a few this summer, we thought it would be a good idea to  get a list and we can start checking some of them off! Although our overall goal is to get to all 50 states, hitting up all 413 national parks might be on my list. Tom and I did quite a few of these before we had kids, and some I would love to take my kids back to.

The best way we have found to visit all the national parks is with the America the Beautiful Pass. This annual pass covers all of your entrance fees to any national park. Some parks we found it also allows for free parking and discounted camping, but it varies park to park, so make sure you check the rules of the specific park before you go. This pass is also free to military, families with a 4th grade student, and those with disabilities. As a senior citizen, you can get a discounted pass for your lifetime! So, many affordable options. Considering some of the bigger parks have $25-30 admission, this pass can save you a lot of money if you plan to go to a couple over the course of the year....and if you want to get them all checked out, you better plan on hitting up a few a year ;)

We got this pass before we left and used it several times across the country and so glad we had it to make entrance into the parks easier.

Which parks have you been to? What is the one park you want to go to the most? I'd love to hear!
